An aging King David lies wrapped in blankets, unable to keep warm, while his son Adonijah gathers fifty men to run before his chariot and declares, “I will be king.”

Now King David was old and advanced in years They covered him with clothes but he couldn’t keep warm
Adonijah exalted himself saying I will be king He prepared chariots and horsemen and fifty men to run before him But Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet And the mighty men who belonged to David were not with Adonijah
Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon Go in to King David and tell him Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me And shall sit upon your throne
Why then does Adonijah reign When you swore by the LORD your God That Solomon your son shall reign after you And sit on your throne
Bathsheba went in to the king in his room Bathsheba bowed and showed respect My lord you swore to your servant Solomon your son shall reign after me
Then Nathan the prophet came in and said My lord the king have you said Adonijah shall reign He has gone down today and called all the king’s sons But he has not called Solomon your servant
Then King David answered call Bathsheba in to me Most certainly as I swore to you by the LORD Solomon your son shall reign after me The LORD the God of Israel has redeemed my soul
Let my lord King David live forever Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom The city rang with rejoicing so great
