Israel is instructed to set apart three cities of refuge, later expanded to six, where a man slayer who kills his neighbour unintentionally may flee the avenger of blood.

When the LORD your God cuts off the nations Whose land the LORD your God gives you
You shall separate three cities for yourself In the midst of your land which the LORD your God gives you You shall prepare the way and divide the coasts
That every man slayer may flee there This is the case of the man slayer who shall flee there Whoso kills his neighbor ignorantly
And hated him not in time past as when a man goes Into the wood with his neighbor to hew wood And his hand fetches a stroke with the axe
To cut down the tree and the head slips from the helve And lights on his neighbor that he dies He shall flee unto one of these cities
That he may live lest the avenger of blood While his heart is hot pursue the man slayer And overtake him because the way is long
