Lyrics
In the second year of Darius the king The word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet
Thus speaks the LORD of hosts saying This people say, The time is not come The time for the LORD’s house to be built Yet you dwell in your ceiled houses
Consider your ways You have sown much and bring in little You eat but have not enough to be filled You drink but are not warmed You clothe you but there is none warm
He that earns wages earns them into a bag with holes Thus says the LORD of hosts, Consider your ways Go up to the mountain and bring wood Build the house and I will take pleasure in it
You looked for much and lo, it came to little And when you brought it home I did blow upon it Why, says the LORD of hosts
Because of my house that lieth in waste Whilst you run everyone to his own house Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew
And the earth is stayed from her fruit I called for a drought on the land
Then Zerubbabel and Joshua heard the voice of the LORD And the people did fear before the LORD Haggai the LORD’s messenger spoke the LORD’s message
The LORD stirred up the spirit of all the remnant They came and did work on the house of the LORD
