Twenty-two verses of drought, false peace, and a nation’s confession open with cracked ground and closed cisterns.

Lyrics
The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah Concerning the dearth Judah mourns and its gates languish They are black because of the ground And the cry of Jerusalem has gone up
The nobles have sent their little ones for water They have come to the cisterns They have found no water They have returned with their vessels empty
They are ashamed and confounded And have covered their heads Because the ground is cracked For there has been no rain in the land
Though our iniquities testify against us Do it for your name’s sake For our backsliding are many We have sinned against you
O hope of Israel The saviour in time of trouble Why should you be as a stranger in the land As a traveller turning aside to lodge
O Lord though our iniquities testify against us Do it for your name’s sake For we have turned away from you And become many things
The Lord said don’t pray for the welfare of this people When they fast I will not hear their cry When they offer burnt offering and meal offering I will not accept them
But I will consume them by the sword By the famine and by the pestilence O Lord why are you like a man astonished Like a mighty man who can’t save
You are in the middle of us, O Lord And we are called by your name Don’t leave us
