This displeased Jonah exceedingly And he was angry
He prayed to the LORD and said I pray to you, was this not what I said when I was in my country Therefore I fled to Tarshish
For I knew that you are a gracious God And merciful, slow to anger And abundant in steadfast love And relenting from evil
Therefore, O LORD, take my life from me For it is better for me to die than to live
The LORD said to Jonah Is it right for you to be angry So Jonah went out of the city And sat on the east side of the city
He made a booth and sat under it in the shade To see what would become of the city The LORD God appointed a plant and caused it to come up over Jonah To be a shade over his head to save him from discomfort
Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant But God appointed a worm when the dawn came the next day The plant withered And the sun beat on Jonah’s head and he was faint
He said, It is better for me to die than to live The LORD said, Do you do well to be angry for the plant Jonah said, I do well to be angry, even unto death The LORD said, You have pity on the plant which you did not labor Neither made it grow Should I not have pity on Nineveh
