The Psalms

These were never meant to be read silently. They are lyrics; Israel sang them for a thousand years before anyone bound them in leather. We are only giving them their voices back.

How it's built

Five books, like the Torah, ending in five hallelujahs.

The Psalter is arranged, not shuffled: five books, each closing with a doxology, moving roughly from lament toward praise, the same direction a life hopes to move. Book I aches, Book V can hardly stop singing, and the last five psalms are pure hallelujah.

Book I

Psalms 1 – 41
David's ache, the honest book. Enemies, tears, and trust learned the hard way.

Book II

Psalms 42 – 72
"As the deer pants..." Longing, exile, and the king's prayers.

Book III

Psalms 73 – 89
The dark book. Asaph asks why the wicked prosper. God can hold the question.

Book IV

Psalms 90 – 106
The turn: "Lord, you have been our dwelling place." The Lord reigns.

Book V

Psalms 107 – 150
Homecoming and hallelujah: the songs of ascent, and five closing fireworks of praise.
