A city in Bashan where the giant king Og held court, located on the eastern plateau beyond the Jordan. Ashtaroth appears as one of two capitals of Og's kingdom; after Israel defeated him, the city became part of Israel's eastern inheritance assigned to the Levites. The place was named after an ancient Canaanite goddess but became an Israelite city.
