A fortified city in the valley where Manasseh's territory met Issachar, controlling a key crossroads near the Jordan. The Philistines hung the bodies of Saul and his sons on its walls after defeating them at Mount Gilboa, making Beth-shan a place of Israel's humiliation. Later it was reclaimed and fortified as part of Israel's strategic holdings.
