A North African city in Libya, known to Scripture mainly through Simon, a Cyrenian forced to carry Jesus' cross to Golgotha. Mark adds that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus, suggesting his family became known in the early church. Cyrenians also appear among those witnessing Pentecost and later preaching the gospel.
