A place name that appears in Joshua's conquest narrative as a landmark near Jericho and again in 1 Samuel during Saul's battles with the Philistines. Beth-aven served as a geographic reference point, located on the high country east of Bethel. Hosea uses the name mockingly to refer to Bethel itself, the religious center of Israel's idolatry, calling it the House of Emptiness instead of the House of God.

Hear its story sung

"Their border on the north quarter was from the Jordan. The border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward. It ended at the wilderness of Beth Aven."
